Monday Update: the Revival Begins

Hey, everyone! I am really sad to see iStudent wither away like this, so I am making it my OFFICIAL mission to revive iStudents, one page at a time! Here are some of my ideas to help bring iStudents School Stuff/Homework Help page back to life again!

7th grade stuff

-We just got back from the Florida Key's trip! Anybody want to write a review? Share a funny story about it? Any non-offensive stories or memories can be emailed to me, or just posted here! (Contact info found on homepage)

-Vocab! I'm not going to do it this week, just because we're still reviving. However, next week, I plan to have it back up and running!

-Math... the reviewing begins. I don't know about Foundations, but Algebra will be having masses of assignments coming our way! We hope to have some information about this put up on the sidebar soon.

-Science projects, coming our way! Not very much to do for this, but if any kind 8th graders want to give us some helpful hints on what to focus on...

-Band concerts, coming up! We'll do a review on all grades, and hopefully the Orchestra concert as well! I might be there, but it'd be better if a 6th grader wrote about their concert... and the frantic preparations beforehand!

Transportation Questions and Answers for 2008-2009

What time will school start next year?

While the times for the school day have not yet been finalized for next year, it is likely that the school day for Hanes will be delayed by thirty minutes next year. This means that the tardy bell would ring at 7:55 and school would be dismissed at 2:30 for all students. As soon as this is finalized, information will be posted on our web site.

Will transportation change next year?

Students living in the northwest zone will continue to have residential pick-up. All students living outside of the Hanes school-of-choice zone will receive transportation services through the Magnet Express Bus Service.

What is Magnet Express Bus Service?

WS/FCS has established a schedule of express bus routes for magnet schools. These routes are for any magnet student who lives outside the school-of-choice zone in which the magnet school resides. Magnet students who live within the school-of-choice zone would stay on regular residential routes.

What is the goal of Magnet Express Bus Service?

Simple: shorter bus rides for students and to get students to school on time. WS/FCS designs the routes so that students' ride times do not exceed 60 minutes each way.

How does Magnet Express Bus Service work?

Parents take students to a central pickup location, or Express stop. Buses would take students from there directly to their magnet school. Elementary and middle schools would be used as Express stops.

FOR EXAMPLE: A route to Hanes Magnet School coming from the southwest corner of Forsyth County might have Express stops at Clemmons and Ward elementary schools. Parents would drop students off at Clemmons and Ward, where students would get on a bus to take them to Hanes.

The process would simply work in reverse to take students home in the afternoon. The Express stops would be 4 to 6 miles from students' homes.

What are the current Magnet Express Bus Stops?

Most of the current Magnet Express Bus Stops are WS/FCS elementary and middle schools.

How early are the Magnet Express Bus Stops open to receive students?

These locations open at 6:30 each morning.

How late are the Magnet Express Bus Stops open in the afternoons?

These locations are open until 6:00 p.m. each day. Parents of any students who are not picked up within one hour after their arrival at their final Magnet Express Stop location will be required to pay a "supervisory fee" of $3.00 per day, payable on a weekly basis at the end of each week. In addition, the parents of any student not picked up by the mandatory time of 6:00pm will be assessed an additional $10.00 "late" fee. Your student will be given a summary of charges incurred at the end of each week; you may pay these charges with cash or check made out to the school where you pick up your student.

Are there any other options for Magnet Express Stops?

Yes. WS/FCS will also pick up magnet students at other naturally occurring express stops where there are at least five students who will consistently ride the bus. For example if at least five students live in a neighborhood and can all get on and off the bus at the same place, then that location can be a bus stop. It is important to note, however, that there must consistently be five students at a stop for WS/FCS to designate the location as a stop.

For example, if seven students live in a neighborhood and parents agree for them to board the bus at the same location, then the location can become a morning bus stop. However, if three of those students consistently stay for after-school activities, the location could not be an afternoon stop since there would be only four students who consistently ride to the stop in the afternoons.

What are the benefits of Express Service?

* Decreased run times.

* Predictable pickup and drop-off times.

* Consistent ride times. As routes become established, they likely will not vary much from year to year.

* Sheltered stops. Many schools that will be used as Express stops have a covered bus ramp area.

* Supervised stop sites.

* More efficient bus routing. WS/FCS will be able to put more students on each bus, and there will be better matching of times with other bus runs.

Express Bus Routes and schedules are being developed for all magnet schools. Proposed Express stops will be sent to parents in May during our normal bus stop verification process.

I, personally, find this whole thing unneeded. There's nothing wrong with my bus stop, and my parents will just have to take me even farther. And if there's less than five people, I can't ride the bus, and since my dad works in another state and my mom works at Summit, I probably won't have a ride. Of course, the thirty minute later thing - I have no problem with. But I guess since we're the minors, we have no say and noone will take what we say seriously, anyway...

Hanes Wins NC Quiz Bowl

The Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl is a competition which provides computer quiz bowls for elementary and middle school students. The intent is that the students have fun while doing a scholastic, computer team competition in their own school. The number of students per team is up to the teacher, and schools may have as many teams as desired. Based on a mock competition, Ms. Edge selected fourteen sixth grade students and divided them into two teams for the state competition.

The tests are self-scoring, computer contests of 100 multiple-choice questions. Areas covered include math, geography, government, sports, spelling, science, literature, English, history, general information and just plain fun trivia. It is meant to be a team activity with all takers around one computer. Two chances to answer correctly are given. Points are awarded based on how fast questions are answered as well as on accuracy. After the contest is taken on quiz bowl day, teachers within the state phone in their scores and answer some questions assuring ethical test taking. This year, the HMS "Purple Team" is the NC champion. The "Gold Team" placed fifth. The teams will be combined for the National Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl which will take place the first week in May. Balloon Poppers Help

Spirit Week

Monday: 80's Day - We do NOT have to wear SMOD! However, we still have to follow these guidelines: no sagging, no exposed midriffs, straps at least three fingers wide, no low-cut tops, shorts, skirts, and dresses should be to the knees. We CAN wear Aeropostale shirts if they have '87 on them, but try not to wear one that says ESTABLISHED 1987; I don't know if that will count.

Tuesday: Favorite College/Sports Day - Sports jerseys over SMOD. [Yuck..] Sports caps in hallways only; not in classrooms or cafeteria. [Then why the heck do we need a cap?]

Wednesday: Hat Day - Self explanatory with SMOD. [What does that mean?]

Thursday: Twin day with SMOD. [Oh, that should be easy... But I have to wear my cheerleading uniform, so no SMOD for me!]

Friday: Spirit Day with SMOD. [See above. ^]

Also, the cheerleaders are doing a fundraiser. It's going to work like this: ten teachers have volunteered to have their names written on jars. Students can then donate money to the jars. The teacher that raises the most money will have to wear an old HMS cheerleading uniform. [Mrs. Purdee has volunteered to take off her wig.] To find out which teachers volunteered, ask me. I only know a few of them, but oh, well.

On February 1st, there will be a school-wide dance for students who have not recieved and ATM, ISS, or OSS for school or bus behavior since December 1st, 2007. This dance will be in the cafeteria from 6:00-8:30 PM. Tickets cost $3.00. You should buy these on Monday, for the tickets are selling out fast. To purchase a ticket, make sure you have the form that was sent home in your team pack. This dance IS semi-formal. You can wear jeans, but they have to be nice and with high heels. I would suggest a dress. NO HORSEPLAY ALLOWED. Skirts and dresses must be at least finger-tip length when your arms are extended. No low-cut tops or dresses are allowed. No sagging. This is a girls choice. There will be a professional DJ and we can request over 150,000 songs. There will also be a fog machine and a light show. You must be picked up by 8:45. Students picked up later than that might not be able to participate in after-school activities. Your parents will have to park and walk up to the front office to sign their child/children out. Drivers may need to show ID. [Hope to see you there!]

As you all know, we got a two hour delay yesterday! How exciting is that? Personally, I think that the elementary schools and high schools should thank middle schools. Why? Well, we got the two hour delay because of ice on the road. Our buses would have come two hours later. Only problem, that's when some high schoolers get on the bus. So the solution? Delay all schools. Except the private schools... Anyways, hope you enjoyed two extra hours of free time! Hopefully, we'll get a delay later in the year!

Remember when grandparents and great-grandparents stated that they only had an 8th grade education? Well, check this out. Could any of us have passed the 8th grade in 1895?

This is the eighth-grade final exam from 1895 in Salina, Kansas. It was taken from the original document on file at the Smokey Valley Genealogical Society and Library in Salina, Kansas, and reprinted by the Salina Journal.

Notice that the exam took FIVE HOURS to complete. Gives the saying, "He only had an 8th grade education," a whole new meaning, doesn't it? This also shows you how poor our education system has become... and, NO! I don't have the answers.

UNBELIEVABLE MATH PROBLEM

Here is a math trick so unbelievable that it will stump you. Personally I would like to know who came up with this and why that person is not running the country.

1. Grab a calculator. (You won't be able to do this one in your head.)
2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number. (NOT the area code.)
3. Multiply by 80.
4. Add 1.
5. Multiply by 250.
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number. 7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again.
8. Subtract 250.
9. Divide number by 2.

Extra Credit - Science

All of you readers who are in or was in Mr. Clauset's science class will know that he awards Super Coupons to students who attended Campus Clean-Up. But the question is, what do we use them on? Mr. C says we should use them on the Chemistry unit, which we're going through now, but previous 8th graders have said that we need to leave them for the Florida Keys pretests. Why is this? Apparently, we will have 20 quizzes and a few major tests about fish, all in the previous 2 weeks. So whats more important? You decide yourself, but I am saving mine for the Florida Keys tests and quizzes.

This isn't the only way to get extra credit. You can also complete the extra credit articles on the front page. These aren't that hard, and you can get 5 points!

Another way: Print out the web coupons and flashcards. You get an easy 3 points just from this!

You don't have to do this, but in my opinion, it's a good idea.

Drowning in Home Work!

Have you ever felt that your homework is just crushing up around you? Well if you are ANYTHING like me, than you are some what of a procrastinator. You just leave your home work, projects, and 9 page report for the last 5 minutes of Social Studies. Well I am not that bad, but i do tend to leave my home work, and studying for the last night. Well I have a few tips for all of you slow people out there.
1. Bribe your self
Just get some thing you want, or something you want to do, and make your self do your work before you get to use that thing.
2. Be in your happy place.
I know that sounds dorky, but if you find a place in your house that is easy for you to concentrate, and has all of your needed supplies available on hand, you can work harder.
3. Take a break
Right before you start, take a 15 min. break to relax from the troubles of school. After that do a subject, then when you are done take a 10 min. break.

I hope these will help you in your daily lives, and if you use them, and you end up chopping you hand off, I am NOT going to wipe up your blood, (or pay $5,245 to cover insurance bills)
